AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ARTIST: PEGGY BROWNTHE

THE LEGEND: The Rainbow Snake is a common motif in Aboriginal arts in Australia. The snake comes in male and female form. Yingarna the female, is the original mother of creation, and Ngalyod, her son, is the great transformer of the land. The Rainbow Snake is one of the oldest religious symbols of Aboriginal Culture. Dreamtime stories tell of the great spirits during creating, in animal and human form who moulded the barren and featureless earth. The snake came from beneath the ground and created huge ridges, mountains and gorges as it pushed upward.

Australian Aboriginal designs are one of the longest continuing traditional arts in the world, going back more than 50,000 years. M&S Textiles Australia, established in 1995, is the pioneer of Aboriginal fabrics in Australia, paying each Aboriginal artist a fair market wage and guaranteeing authenticity of these licensed designs. The wonderful hues and dynamic, organic shapes make our Australian fabrics ideal for quilting, home décor and wearable art.

PALLETTE: Soft blue, earth pink, soft yellow ochre, brownish green, green, shades of brown, white, on black
